She Told Two Friends…

There were a series of TV commercials in the 1970s that featured a young woman who cheerfully chirped that she “told two friends about Faberge Organic Shampoo, who told two friends, who told two friends, and so on, and so on…” while her image multiplied relentlessly on the screen.

The commercial was annoying, but the principle of exponentially spreading a message by word-of-mouth is profound. I did the math: If I tell two friends each week, who in turn tell two friends each week, then the message will spread to over half a million people in three months. That’s absolutely amazing!

At the True Woman 08 Conference last week, thousands of Christian women were challenged to say “Yes” to God’s plan and purpose for their lives - to embrace his beautiful design for womanhood, and thereby bring God glory.

Over the past few decades, the secular woman’s movement taught women to believe that “We need and can trust no other authority than our own personal truth” (Betty Friedan). Today, women think we have the personal “right” to “name” (define) ourselves, our world, and ultimately, even our god. This misguided attitude has sadly crept from society into the church.

The Bible teaches that ultimately, only God has the right to “name.” He created male and female “in his image”, that is, to reflect something essential about his own character and nature. Thus, the manner in which male and female function and interact is meant to reflect the beauty and glory of God. To this end, Scripture instructs men and women to relate in complementary and distinct ways. Though it’s counter-cultural, this is a message that Christian women need to embrace. And because it relates to the nature and character of God, to issues surrounding personal identity, and to the very practical question of “How then, should we live?”, the message is an important one.

Last week, the True Woman Conference (Sponsored by Revive our Hearts, Moody Radio, Moody Bible Institute, FamilyLife, Moms In Touch International, Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood and more) launched a new kind of woman’s movement for Christian women. They are encouraging women to join the movement by signing the True Woman Manifesto and Sharing the True Woman Message. Women can also participate by starting a 30-Day True Woman Make-Over.

At the conference, thousands of women signed the Manifesto. Since then, hundreds more have signed up on line. But for this movement to truly be a movement, the message needs to be spread at a grassroots level by women like you, who will tell two friends, who will tell two friends, and so on, and so on…

Are you up for the challenge? Will you sign the manifesto and tell two friends… and challenge them to tell two friends? Sign the Manifesto here. Click on the email icon to tell two friends about this challenge. Finally, just for fun, watch the Faberge Organics Commercial on YouTube… and remember to keep passing the message on.
